Anglické divadlo v Českých Budějovicích

Dne 21. 10. 2015 se 44 zájemců převážně z řad studentů třetích a čtvrtých ročníků vydalo do Českých Budějovic zhlédnout divadelní představení v anglickém jazyce – hru The Life and Death of Martin Luther King v podání TNT Theatre Britain, příběh muže, který „snil svůj sen“ o rovnosti všech lidí a který v 60. letech 20. století výrazně proměnil americkou společnost.
Představení bylo tentokrát po jazykové stránce poměrně náročné, kromě standardní angličtiny zazníval i jižanský dialekt, ale věříme, že většina z našich studentů se i s touto výzvou vypořádala.

The Man Who Had a Dream

MARTIN LUTHER KING
by TNT Theatre

A review by Magdaléna Kůlová and Alžběta Poskočilová, 3.A

On Wednesday October 21st, 44 students interested in developing their English language skills met at around 6:50 at the railway station to buy tickets to České Budějovice. We were heading to the Metropol Centre where the TNT Theatre Britain was about to perform one of its plays – Martin Luther King.

At 9:15 we gathered in front of the Metropol Centre and our teachers gave us tickets. The play was supposed to start at 9:30 but we had to wait for some other schools to arrive. At around quarter to ten the lights were finally turned off while the stage was lit by spotlights.

The cast of TNT Theatre Britain consists of five people only – four men and one woman. Since the play demonstrates the time period of racial segregation and attempts of the African Americans to truly gain their freedom and equality before the law, actors wore simple masks of black or white colour, depending on which character they were playing. This idea we find really clever because it's understandable for everyone, no matter the level of their English.

The story begins in the city of Montgomery, Alabama, with quite an ordinary woman. Her name is Rosa Parks and although she is a decent American, there is no place for her in the bus when a white man wants to take a seat she's occupying. And he can take her seat because at that time and in that place, Rosa Parks' black skin makes her inferior in the eyes of “white authority“. When she refuses to stand in the bus, she is arrested.

Another scene. We meet the same actress, Veronica Beatrice Lewis. This time she is portraying Coretta King, the wife of Martin Luther King, with Adrian Decosta in the role of M. L. King by her side. From this scene on, we watch the Baptist preacher become one of the most famous activists in the history of fighting for civil rights. The importance of King's part in this fight rests in his determination to inspire people to use the nonviolent way while fighting for their rights. He promotes love, tolerance, patience.

In the play, we watch him being monitored by the FBI as Gareth Radcliffe portrays Jack Nader, a TV reporter; Nader focuses mainly on the heated situation around M. L. King. Later he becomes King's friend and is threatened by the FBI director when refusing to inform on King. The FBI accuses King of being a communist, the radical Black Power movement accuses King of being too “soft“, but the great Martin Luther King is successful in his efforts. He moves to other cities where he teaches his conviction.

Later on, his fame and success as well as the constant pressure of threats aimed at him and his family turn his head. He starts to cheat on his wife and drink. The FBI tells this to Nader who refuses to believe it and decides to confront King in person. When Nader arrives at the hotel where King is accommodated and wants to show King the file he got from the FBI, he sees a prostitute coming out of King's hotel room. Nader is disappointed with King and heads for a bar across the street. Some white men there get him drunk and make him give away the number of King's room. Meanwhile, King has a deep talk with his other friend about his doubts and worries and goes out to the balcony to get some fresh air. At the same time, the drunken Nader runs to warn him; but he is too late. At the very end of the performance, King is shot to the chest and falls into the arms of Jack Nader, dead.

Even though the play is rather dramatic and serious in tone, the TNT Theatre Britain didn't forget to add humour and musical elements. We appreciated especially the beautiful voice of Veronica B. Lewis. Also, this year it was a bit challenging to understand everything since the actors spoke with strong southern accents. Still, we believe most of the students had a good time and enjoyed the performance.
